The Ecovillage MovementEcovillages are currently emerging in all regions of the world in order to develop feasible lifestyles. The Global Ecovillage Network has been representing the common interests of these initiatives at the United Nations since 1994. The ecovillage movement embodies and implements the essential aspects of some of the great UN conferences, for example, the environmental aspect of Rio de Janeiro 1992. Furthermore ecovillages provide manifold solutions that are in accordance with what is outlined in the “Austrian Strategy for Sustainable Development” [Österreichische Strategie zur Nachhaltigen Entwicklung]. What are Ecovillages?Despite the great variety of ecovillages worldwide they all share one common objective: they strive to set an example of how a high standard of living can be maintained through social cohesion within society without harming the ecology of the earth. They strive to set an example of how society’s bonds can be strengthened and of how humans can rediscover their niche within the ecology of the earth.Ecovillages aim at the realization of a feasible and globalizable lifestyle. If we continue living your current resource-intensive lifestyle we will cause further severe damage to the ecosystems and und ultimately to ourselves. Ecovillages are open to all people, irrespective of their age, their philosophy of life or their religion – as long as they agree with its core values. They are also places of integration and a cross-generation way of life. The Ecological AspectIn order to achieve a sustainable lifestyle it is indispensable to take ecological concepts as a role model, for example by promoting biodiversity through short and as much as possible closed material cycles, waste prevention or the use of renewable instead of fossil resources. This has to be based on a conscious way of treating our planet earth. The Social AspectAs opposed to the increasing isolation and loneliness in today’s society the ecovillage stands for a form of community which – far beyond family structures – does justice to the needs of the individual. Lived solidarity is the cornerstone of working and living with each other. The Economic AspectLocal supply and self-sufficiency to a large extent, short distances as well as need-based production allow for meeting the economic preconditions of a feasible lifestyle. To this end integration in and interaction with the region, long-term thinking, cooperation and a crisis-proof economic structure are indispensable. The Individual/Spiritual AspectThe ecovillage offers room for the individual as well as collective self-development and self-expression. A self-conscious discussion of all dimensions of being human is conducive to becoming a free and self-responsible individual. The Cultural AspectThe ecovillage is a cultural workshop linking tradition and innovation. The influences of the ecological, social, economic and personal aspects will form a holistic culture which allows people to meet beyond religious, social or philosophical barriers. |
